My mom’s worried about me; I can tell. I see her watching me all the time, so much so that I want to just stay in my room. I want to crawl into a ball and never leave my bed. It’s funny to think that all I wanted for so long was to be close to Ryan, and now, when I know he’s only four doors down, I can’t stand the thought of seeing him. I know that’s crazy, but at least if I don’t see him, it doesn’t make it real; I can still live in hope. He’s got a girlfriend now; I saw it on social media, probably within hours of it happening, and it’s not just any girl. It’s Kelly Taylor, the one girl I couldn’t stand, and now he’s with her. A part of me thinks maybe there was something there before, before we broke up when they were back at Cal State together. I think back on the words Ryan shouted at me when we broke up—that he fucked his way around Cal State—but I know deep down it’s not true. I know Ryan was mine, only mine, which means that since we’ve broken up, he’s chosen Kelly. Despite the desperation and heartache that hit me when I saw the picture she put up with him, declaring him her gorgeous boyfriend, I was also disappointed, really disappointed. Out of all the girls out there, he picked her.
I roll onto my side and pull out my phone, again looking at the picture of the two of them. I can’t help it. I can’t stop looking at them. As much as I hate it, they do look good together. There’s no denying how good-looking Kelly is, and with her standing next to him, his arm wrapped around her, they look like they’re ready to take on the world. They’re devastatingly attractive. Kelly’s the sort of girl he should have been with all along, someone happy to be on his arm, willing to move where he is, willing to put him first—not someone like me, someone who was too pigheaded to even see what was important when she had the chance.
My phone beeps with a message.
Sam: Sure you won’t come to the party?
I drop the phone and turn and face the ceiling. We’ve only been back from our trip for three days, and it still feels weird not spending all my time with Sam. She’s been amazing all summer. She made sure she was by my side every step of the way, and just seemed to know when I was feeling uncomfortable. We barely spoke about Ryan, to be honest; she just seemed to know that I needed to chill on this trip, to not have to think about things. Although I could tell she was worried about me, we had a great time. The trip was exactly what I needed. Still, I can’t go to Jess’s party. Sam wants me to go, and Jess and Katie have both texted me about it, but I can’t face it.
